Pledge, 2014, Oil and aluminum on canvas and oil on waxed canvas, 20"x16"
I strongly endorse supporting causes one believes in. Showing support of and participating with organizations that build community, serve diverse populations and engage the public in new experiences are important not only for the well being of those organizations but also for the greater population.
In making new work for the SoEx and Intersection auctions I wanted to speak to the act of donation and support through these art auctions. Having participated both as a donating artist and collector/supporter over the years I have been struck by the generosity of the people involved on all sides – the wellspring of support centered around these organizations. However, it also cannot be denied that these very auctions can be contentious in so much as they can have a nullifying or discounting effect on the work of the artists who donate their art. Often surveyed by some collectors who keep bids low in search of a cheap deal on a hot name. First and foremost the art auctions are benefits, fundraisers for these non-profits. Every dollar helps keep their programming alive and vital. So I encourage all to show your support, bid what you can but also bid with purpose. For that reason my auction work this year are hand-painted pledges declaring one’s support for the organization and their mission.
