Belongings

This series stems from making work as a new father.  Leading up to the birth of my son I imagined conversations we could have one day. In response to his imminent arrival, I began painting personal objects, books, records, things observed around my studio, that played a role in my development as a person. These painted objects then became mediations on what I wanted to share with him one day. After he was born, I painted at the kitchen table as he napped. Moving through his first year and into his second, I am learning through observing his open state of curiosity and discovery. Now I see this series not just as a sharing of what has been meaningful to me but as an opportunity to question and rediscover ideas embodied in these belongings alongside my son, and as an extension of this, to the viewer as well. The paintings are intended to create a space for future conversations and continued development. To not simply see the belongings but as a way of finding belonging; to be together.

Working with watercolors allows me to paint in limited windows of time in spaces I share with my family. It is important to me that they be painted to scale and carefully observed. The project continues to morph and develop in tandem with my son.
